How to do these
Find the discriminant:
- a = 2, b = 5, c = 1.
- b² - 4ac is 25 - 8.
- It is positive but not a perfect square.
The answer is , two irrational solutions.
Where students go wrong
Dropping the sign of b before squaring. b² is positive whatever b was, so a negative b changes nothing here. What does matter is the sign of c: a negative c makes -4ac positive and the discriminant is guaranteed positive.
Also called the nature of the roots or b squared minus 4ac.
