How to do these

x3−2x2−5x+6=0

  1. Try small values: x = 1 gives zero, so (x - 1) is a factor.
  2. Divide it out to get x squared minus x minus 6.
  3. That factors as (x - 3)(x + 2).

The answer is x=1,3 or −2.

Where students go wrong

Stopping at one root. A cubic has three roots and a quartic has four, so finding the first factor is the start of the job, not the end. Divide it out and keep going.
