A binomial squared means the parenthesis times itself, so it expands like any other pair of binomials. The result always has three terms, and the middle one is twice the product of the two.

How to do these

${(4 p - 1)}^{2}$

Square the first: 16p squared.
Twice the product: 2 times 4p times -1 is -8p.
Square the last: 1.

The answer is $16 p^{2} - 8 p + 1$ .

Where students go wrong

Squaring each term and stopping. A plus b, all squared, is not a squared plus b squared. The middle term is twice the product of the two, and leaving it out is the single most common error in Algebra 1.
