Algebra is the largest domain on SAT Math, about 35% of the section, 13 to 15 of the 44 questions. It is also the most learnable, because every question in it is one of five skills and each skill has a small number of shapes.
The mistake students make here is treating algebra as the easy part and moving on. On the harder second module, algebra questions do not get harder algebraically. They get harder to read. The equation you need is straightforward once you find it, and finding it is the skill.

The skills in this domain
- Linear equations in one variable — The single most common question on the test. Solve for x, or read what x means in a context.
- Linear functions — Slope and intercept as meaning, not just numbers. What does the 35 in the model represent.
- Linear equations in two variables — Two quantities in one equation, usually a cost or a mixture, and reading the graph of it.
- Systems of equations — Two conditions at once. Also the no-solution and infinitely-many-solutions questions, which are really about slope.
- Linear inequalities — At least, at most, no more than. The words that flip a sign, and shading a region.

What makes algebra hard on the SAT
Three things, none of them algebra.
- Translation. Most algebra questions arrive as a paragraph. The work is turning that paragraph into an equation, and the equation is then two steps. Students who slow down at the translation and speed up at the solving finish faster than students who do the reverse.
- What the number means. The test asks what a coefficient represents far more often than it asks you to compute it. In a model like C = 35d + 75, the 35 is the per-day cost and the 75 is the fixed cost, and reading which is which is the whole question.
- The no-solution family. Same slope and different intercepts means no solution. Same slope and same intercept means infinitely many. Questions that look like they need heavy algebra are usually testing whether you know that.
