SAT Linear Inequalities Questions: The Five Types and the Fast Way

Inequalities are the skill inside Algebra that students practice least, because they look like equations with a different symbol. They are not. The symbol changes what the question is: a budget, a limit, a range, a region. Most of the mistakes here are about which direction the inequality points, and that comes from four words.

The four words

At most and no more than mean ≤. At least and a minimum of mean ≥. Everything else on this topic is translation plus Desmos. When you graph an inequality in Desmos it shades the region, and a point is a solution if it lands in the shading.

The five ways the SAT asks it

1. Write the inequality from the words

The total cost, in dollars, to rent a kayak consists of a $20\$20$20 service fee and a $15\$15$15 per hour rental fee. A person rents a kayak for ttt hours and intends to spend a maximum of $95\$95$95 to rent the kayak. Which inequality represents this situation?

Same as writing an equation: flat fee plus rate times hours. "At most $95" turns the equals sign into ≤, so 20 + 15t ≤ 95. The wrong choices swap the fee and the rate. Find the per-hour number, attach it to t, and the rest falls into place.

2. Which point is a solution?

Graph both inequalities in Desmos and see where the shading overlaps, then test the choices, or just plug each point in. (0, −3): −3 ≤ 0 and −3 ≤ 0, both true. The other three each break one of the inequalities. This is a two-minute question by hand and a thirty-second question with the graph.

3. The most or the least that fits

A photographer is booking a session. It costs a onetime fee of $50\$50$50 for equipment rental and $12.50\$12.50$12.50 per photo printed. The photographer has a budget of $250\$250$250. What is the greatest number of photos that can be printed without exceeding the budget?

Set up 50 + 12.50p ≤ 250 and solve: p ≤ 16. The trap on these is rounding. If the answer had come out to 16.4, the most photos would be 16, not 17, because you cannot print part of a photo. When the question says "minimum number of packages," you round up instead. The direction of the rounding is decided by the story, not the decimal.

4. What does the term represent?

15 is the price of one deluxe candle, d is how many, so 15d is the money spent on all the deluxe candles. Two of the choices describe the price of one candle, which is the coefficient alone, not the term. Coefficient means each, coefficient times variable means all of them, same rule as every other equation on the test.

5. The system that hides the answer

The second inequality says x > 4. Put that into the first: y > 3(4) − 2, so y > 10. The choice y > 4 is for people who stop at x, and y > 2 is for people who ignore the second inequality entirely. It is a substitution question wearing an inequality, and Desmos will show you the region if you want to confirm it.

Where the points actually go

Pointing the symbol the wrong way, rounding in the wrong direction, and treating an inequality question like an equation question. All three are fixed by seeing enough of them that "at most" stops needing translation.

Common Questions

"At most" and "no more than" mean less than or equal to (≤). "At least" and "a minimum of" mean greater than or equal to (≥). Those four phrases decide the direction of the inequality in almost every word problem on the test.

Plug the point into every inequality; it is a solution only if all of them are true. Or graph the system in Desmos on the SAT and see whether the point lands where the shaded regions overlap.

The story decides. The maximum number of items that fit a budget rounds down, because a partial item does not exist. The minimum number of packages needed rounds up, because a partial package is not enough. Never round by the decimal alone.

Linear inequalities are one of the skills inside Algebra, which is about 35% of SAT Math. Expect one to three per test, with the two-variable systems and "what does the term represent" versions in the harder module.
