How to do these

Rotate (4,1) 90∘ counterclockwise

  1. Swap the two coordinates.
  2. Then flip the sign of the new x.
  3. So (4, 1) becomes (-1, 4).

The answer is (−1,4).

Where students go wrong

Turning the wrong way. Counterclockwise is the positive direction, so a 90 degree rotation clockwise is the 270 degree one, and doing it by eye lands three quarters out.
