SAT Advanced Math: What It Covers and Where Points Go

Advanced Math is about 35% of SAT Math, 13 to 15 of the 44 questions, and it is where the harder second module puts most of its difficulty. If Module 2 felt like a different test, this domain is usually why.

The name oversells it. There is no calculus and no trigonometry here. It is quadratics, exponentials, polynomials and rewriting expressions, and the difficulty comes from questions that hide which of those you are looking at.

The skills in this domain

  • Nonlinear functions — Quadratics and exponentials: vertex, roots, growth and decay, and reading a curve.
  • Nonlinear equations and systems — A line meeting a parabola, and the questions that ask how many times they meet.
  • Equivalent expressions — Factoring, exponent rules, and rewriting one expression as another that reveals something.

Why this domain is where points go

  • Form carries the information. A quadratic in standard form tells you the y-intercept, in vertex form the vertex, in factored form the roots. Most hard questions are asking for something that one particular form hands you free. Recognising which form you need is the skill being tested.
  • The discriminant questions. Anything asking for the value of a constant that gives exactly one solution, or no real solutions, is a discriminant question wearing a costume. Desmos does it faster: graph it with a slider and watch the crossings.
  • Exponential versus linear. Growing by 5 each year is linear. Growing by 5% each year is exponential. The test asks students to tell those apart constantly, and phrases it as a story.

No. The SAT does not test calculus, and Advanced Math is not calculus despite the name. The hardest content is quadratics, exponentials and polynomial manipulation.

If you scored well enough on Module 1 you were routed to the harder second module, and that module weights Advanced Math heavily. Students who describe Module 2 as a different test are usually describing a jump in quadratic and exponential questions.
