Advanced Math is where the section gets its reputation. It is also the most lopsided area on the test: one skill is half of it. We counted every Advanced Math question on all 8 Bluebook practice tests, then checked the ratio against the 528 Advanced Math questions in College Board’s Question Bank. Counted September 2026, after College Board’s August Question Bank update.

  • 14.2 Advanced Math questions per test, 32% of the section (College Board’s published weight: about 35%).
  • Most common skill: Nonlinear functions, 7.4 per test, 52% of the area.
  • Hardest by College Board’s labels: Nonlinear functions, 39% of its bank questions rated Hard.

The 3 Advanced Math skills, ranked by how often they appear

2Nonlinear equations and systems4.431%16331%38%
3Equivalent expressions2.417%11422%30%

"Per test" is the average on a 44-question form. "Test share" is that skill’s slice of the Advanced Math questions on a test and "Bank share" is its slice of the bank’s Advanced Math questions, so the two can be read against each other. "Hard" is the share of the skill’s bank questions labeled Hard.

What to take from it

  • Nonlinear functions is 52% of the area and the biggest single skill on the whole test, 7.4 questions per form and never fewer than 6. Quadratics, exponentials, vertex form, growth and decay. If you fix one thing, fix this.
  • Nonlinear equations and systems is another 4.4. The discriminant, a line meeting a parabola, how many solutions.
  • Equivalent expressions is the smallest at 2.4 per test, yet the bank gives it 22% of its Advanced Math questions. If you have been grinding factoring drills, that is why it has not moved your score much.

For what each skill asks and how the questions are built, see the Advanced Math guide.

How we counted

All 8 Bluebook practice tests (528 unique Math questions, each carrying College Board’s own skill label; "per test" is a 44-question form averaged over 16 module combinations) set against the full Math Question Bank (1,876 questions, counted September 2026, after College Board’s August Question Bank update). Difficulty labels come from the bank, since Bluebook questions carry none. No College Board question is reproduced. The full method is in the overview.
