Geometry and Trigonometry is the smallest area on SAT Math and the one with the hardest questions in it. Four skills, seven questions, and two of the four are the most Hard-rated skills on the entire test. We counted every Geometry and Trigonometry question on all 8 Bluebook practice tests, then checked the ratio against the 335 Geometry and Trigonometry questions in College Board’s Question Bank. Counted September 2026, after College Board’s August Question Bank update.
- 7.0 Geometry and Trigonometry questions per test, 16% of the section (College Board’s published weight: about 15%).
- Most common skill: Lines, angles, and triangles, 2.2 per test, 32% of the area.
- Hardest by College Board’s labels: Circles, 62% of its bank questions rated Hard.
The 4 Geometry and Trigonometry skills, ranked by how often they appear
| # | Skill | Per test | Test share | Bank | Bank share | Hard |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lines, angles, and triangles | 2.2 | 32% | 98 | 29% | 34% |
| 2 | Area and volume | 1.8 | 25% | 106 | 32% | 34% |
| 3 | Right triangles and trigonometry | 1.5 | 21% | 66 | 20% | 61% |
| 4 | Circles | 1.5 | 21% | 65 | 19% | 62% |
"Per test" is the average on a 44-question form. "Test share" is that skill’s slice of the Geometry and Trigonometry questions on a test and "Bank share" is its slice of the bank’s Geometry and Trigonometry questions, so the two can be read against each other. "Hard" is the share of the skill’s bank questions labeled Hard.
What to take from it
- Lines, angles, and triangles is the most common at 2.2 per test, mostly angle chasing and similar triangles.
- Area and volume is next at 1.8, and the bank over-serves it: 32% of the bank’s geometry against 25% of a test’s.
- Right triangles and trigonometry and Circles are 1.5 each, and they are the two most Hard-rated skills on the entire test: 61% and 62% of their bank questions are labeled Hard. Few questions, but they are the ones at the end of Module 2 that decide an 800. Our circle questions guide goes through the equation-of-a-circle traps.
For what each skill asks and how the questions are built, see the Geometry and Trigonometry guide.
How we counted
All 8 Bluebook practice tests (528 unique Math questions, each carrying College Board’s own skill label; "per test" is a 44-question form averaged over 16 module combinations) set against the full Math Question Bank (1,876 questions, counted September 2026, after College Board’s August Question Bank update). Difficulty labels come from the bank, since Bluebook questions carry none. No College Board question is reproduced. The full method is in the overview.
