We counted every Math question on all 8 Bluebook practice tests and every Math question in College Board’s Question Bank, 1,876 of them, and sorted the 19 official skills by how often they actually show up. Counted September 2026, after College Board’s August Question Bank update. The short version: five skills make up 51% of a test, three skills almost never appear, and the Question Bank does not practice you in the proportions the test uses.
The five skills that are half the test
- Nonlinear functions: 7.4 questions per test, 17% of the section.
- Linear functions: 4.6 questions per test, 11% of the section.
- Nonlinear equations in one variable and systems of equations in two variables: 4.4 questions per test, 10% of the section.
- Linear equations in two variables: 3.1 questions per test, 7% of the section.
- Systems of two linear equations in two variables: 3.1 questions per test, 7% of the section.
Together that is 22.6 of the 44 questions. Every one of the five is a linear or nonlinear function, equation or system. If you are short on time, this list is your study plan.

"Per test" is the average number of questions on a 44-question form, and "Share" is that skill’s slice of the 44. "Bank" is how many questions the Question Bank holds on the skill. "Hard" is the share of those bank questions College Board labels Hard.

The three skills that barely appear
Probability and conditional probability, Inference from sample statistics and margin of error, Evaluating statistical claims: observational studies and experiments. Between them they average 1.1 questions per test, and one of them, evaluating statistical claims, did not appear on any of the 8 tests at all. The bank holds 85 questions on them. Do not spend your third week of prep there.
The Question Bank is not the test
The Question Bank is the best free practice there is, and it is a study pile, not a blueprint. It over-represents Area and volume (6% of the bank against 4% of a test) and under-represents Nonlinear functions (13% of the bank against 17% of a test). A student who works through the bank front to back practices nonlinear functions less than the test demands and area and volume more. Use the ranking above to set your proportions, and the bank to fill them.
Where the hardest SAT Math questions are
By College Board’s own difficulty labels, the hardest skills are in geometry: Circles (62% of its bank questions are Hard) and Right triangles and trigonometry (61%). Neither is common, at 1.5 per test each, but when they appear, they tend to be the questions that separate a 750 from an 800.

- Algebra: 15.2 per test (35%); College Board’s published weight is about 35%.
- Advanced Math: 14.2 per test (32%); College Board’s published weight is about 35%.
- Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: 7.6 per test (17%); College Board’s published weight is about 15%.
- Geometry and Trigonometry: 7.0 per test (16%); College Board’s published weight is about 15%.

How we counted
Two sources, counted separately, then set side by side. Counted September 2026, after College Board’s August Question Bank update.
- The tests. All 8 Bluebook practice tests (Practice Tests 4 through 11), 528 unique Math questions. Every question carries College Board’s own domain and skill label. A student sees Module 1 plus one Module 2, so "per test" means a 44-question form, averaged over all 16 module combinations.
- The bank. The full Math section of College Board’s Question Bank, 1,876 questions including the August 2026 additions. Each one is labeled with a domain, a skill and a difficulty. Bluebook questions carry no difficulty label, so every difficulty figure here comes from the bank.
Nothing from either source is reproduced. These are counts of College Board’s labels, not their questions. The practice question below is ours. We will re-run the count after each Question Bank update.
