How to do these
Find the critical points of
- Differentiate: the derivative is 3x squared minus 12.
- Set that equal to zero: 3x squared equals 12, so x squared equals 4.
- Solve: x equals 2 and x equals negative 2.
The answer is .
Where students go wrong
Giving the y value instead of the x value. A critical point is answered with x, because it names a place along the axis, not a height. Some books want the pair, and the derivative gives you the x first either way.
Also called critical numbers, critical values or stationary points.
