Roughly a quarter of the questions in SAT Math have no answer choices. You type the answer yourself. Students consistently rate these as the scariest part of the section, and their fear is half right and half fixable.
The Half That Is Right
Free-response questions really are harder, structurally. With no answer choices, two crutches disappear: you cannot work backwards from the options, and you cannot sanity-check yourself by noticing your result matches choice B. Often that means doing a bit more actual algebra than a multiple-choice version of the same problem would require.
So yes, they demand more. But the skills are the same skills. A student who can solve the problem can solve it without choices. Which brings us to the fixable half.
The Half That Is Fixable: Entry Rules
A depressing number of free-response points are lost not to math but to the answer box itself. Learn these rules once and stop donating points:
- You get 5 characters (6 if the answer is negative, since the negative sign gets its own character)
- Never round prematurely. It is very rare for an SAT question to ask you to round. If your answer is a long decimal, type as many digits as fit in those 5 characters
- The final digit is forgiving. The SAT accepts both the truncated and the rounded version of that last digit. 0.6666 and 0.6667 both count for two thirds. What does not count is 0.66 or 0.67, because you rounded off digits you had room for
- Fractions are your friend. 2/3 fits in the box, is exact, and requires no rounding decisions at all
- Huge numbers come with instructions. You physically cannot type 5,000,000 in 5 characters, so when an answer is that large the question will ask for it in different units, like "answer in millions." For 5 million you literally just enter 5. Read for that phrasing; it is always there when they need it
When do you actually round? Basically only in multiple choice, when a question says "closest to" or "approximately." And there it is obvious, because your calculation will land clearly nearest one of the four options presented.
