Families do not hire SAT tutors because tutors know secret math. The math is Algebra 1, geometry, a little trig, and about half of Algebra 2. All of it is in free videos and cheap books. What they are actually paying for happens in the first session, when the tutor looks at a practice test, asks what math class the student is in, and decides: we start here, in this order, at this level. The diagnosis is the product. The teaching is almost the easy part.
That is also why most SAT math study plans you find online are useless. Not wrong exactly. Useless. "Week 1: linear equations. Week 2: systems." Written for a student who does not exist, at a level nobody asked about. A sophomore in geometry sitting at 480 and a senior in calculus sitting at 690 search the same phrase, land on the same page, and get handed the same plan. At least one of them is being sent to the wrong place. Usually both.
So here is how I actually decide where a student starts. This is the same logic I use with private students, and as of this week it is built into Sigma Prep, which will matter at the end of this post.
The Default Order Follows the Points
SAT Math is four domains, and they are not equal. Algebra and Advanced Math are each roughly 35% of the section. Problem-Solving and Data Analysis and Geometry/Trigonometry are roughly 15% each. Two domains carry about 70% of your score, so the default spine of every plan I build is the same: Algebra first, Advanced Math second, the two small domains after.
Algebra leads even though Advanced Math is worth the same, because Advanced Math is built on top of it and because most of the easy and medium points on the test are algebra points. Between the two small domains, I put Data Analysis ahead of Geometry for a reason that surprises people: students are usually less familiar with it. Geometry got a whole school year of your life. Nobody got a year of median-versus-mean questions and margin-of-error questions. That 15% tends to be softer than the geometry 15%. Your Math Class Bends That Order
The default order assumes you have seen all the material at some point. Where you are in school changes that, so the order should bend:
- Currently in Algebra 1: Algebra, then Data Analysis, then Geometry, and Advanced Math last. Most of Advanced Math is material you have simply not been taught yet, so front-load everything you can already win and give the rest time to show up in class. Honest note: this is really early to be starting SAT prep. If the test is still years away, build the algebra muscle and do not stress the rest.
- Currently in Geometry: Algebra first, then Geometry while your school year is doing half the work for you, then Data Analysis, then Advanced Math. Still a bit early, because the Advanced Math points would mean teaching yourself most of Algebra 2 on your own.
- In Algebra 2, Precalc, or Calculus: Advanced Math first, because it is the freshest thing you know and the first thing you will forget. Then Algebra, and here is the part that stings: the deeper you are into calculus, the rustier your Algebra 1 usually is. You have been doing derivatives while the SAT quietly asks about the discriminant. Then Data Analysis, then Geometry.
Which raises the timing question underneath all of this: when should you start at all? My usual answer is halfway through Algebra 2 or beyond. Before that point you are prepping for a test that covers material you have not met yet, which is possible but inefficient. Your Score Sets the Starting Difficulty
Order says what to study. Your current score says at what level to enter each topic. My actual cutoffs:
- Below 550: start at Easy. At this range you are not losing your points on hard questions. You are losing them on easy and medium ones, and the adaptive module structure makes those exact questions decide which Module 2 you even see. Easy first is not remedial. It is where your next 100 points physically live.
- 550 to 660: start at Medium. Easy problems mostly test whether you read carefully, and you already clear that bar most of the time. Medium is where your misses cluster, so that is the entry point.
- 670 and up: start at Hard. Grinding easy sets at this level is rehearsing something you already own. Your lost points are in hard questions and careless mistakes, so go straight at the hard ones.
And the honest corollary: if you are at 520 with a test in five weeks, hard problems should barely be in your plan at all. I have students I never point at hard questions, and that is not lowering the bar. It is refusing to spend hours where the fewest points live.
A Real Test Beats Your Own Opinion
Everything above works from two questions and a score report. But the moment you take a full-length practice test, the placement gets sharper, because misses are per-topic evidence and opinions are not. "I am fine at algebra" is a feeling. Missing an easy linear-equations question is a fact, and it means that specific topic starts at Easy for you even if the rest of your plan starts at Medium. Sweep a topic clean on a test and you get the opposite ruling: skip ahead in it.
This per-topic correction is exactly what a tutor is doing when they mark up your diagnostic, and it is the single biggest thing missing from every generic plan on the internet. Two students with identical 580s can have opposite plans. One bleeds points in Data Analysis, the other in exponents. Same score, different students, different plans.
Re-measure at Checkpoints, Not at the End
A plan that only measures at the finish line is a plan you cannot steer. After each domain block, sit a full-length test under real conditions and let the result re-place you: cleared topics stay cleared, new misses pull topics back onto the list at the level where they broke.
One detail we found while building this into the product: the official practice tests do not have identical Module 1 makeups. On one of them, nearly half of Module 1 is pure algebra. On others, Advanced Math is the biggest slice. So checkpoint tests can be matched to what you just finished, which turns a generic mock into a targeted measurement of the block you just cleared. And since official tests run out fast, every Sigma test comes in three versions, so a checkpoint retake is a fresh measurement instead of a memory check.
