You Get an Entire Summer of Prep Behind It
Every other test date competes with school. Homework, sports, APs, finals. August is the only date where the two months before it are yours. If you are willing to devote real time to prep, summer gives you more of it than any other window on the calendar, and a modest daily plan compounds fast when nothing else is competing for your attention.
The Timeline Works Perfectly for Applications
August scores come back with plenty of room before early action and early decision deadlines. That does two things. First, you know exactly where you stand while you are finalizing your college list. Second, if the score is short of your target, October is right there as a retake, and you will know precisely what to work on in between. Students who wait until October for their first senior-year sitting have no such cushion. October goes badly and the early deadlines are on top of you.
The One Warning: Register Early
Here is the practical catch, and it trips up students every year. Everyone else has figured out that August is a good date too. Seats fill up fast, faster than most other test dates, for exactly the reasons above.
If you wait to register, you may find nothing available nearby, and end up planning a drive to a test center an hour or two away. How to Spend the Summer Before It
